Description of issue

The upstream cmake changes in v4.0 caused a storm of failing packages due to:
Compatibility with CMake < 3.5 has been removed from CMake.

try building ffmpeg & it's dependencies and see.

We only ship supported versions of software. Unless upstream decides to keep supporting CMake 3, we won't ship it.

What a weird stance to take. You have "supported" packages that fail to build with your "supported" version of cmake, interesting what's the definition of "supported" that you use.

A normal take would be to just add cmake@3 version (or better add cmake@4), since you know, just because version 4 came out - does not mean you cannot use version 3 of some software, especially if it's software like cmake.

Your comment shows a fundamental lack of understanding for package management and what it takes to run a massive, free project like Homebrew. Feel free to create your own Tap and do whatever you want.

@x78x79x82x79 3 weeks ago I created a PR that adds cmake@3 formula. You can help with merging it if you contact CMake maintainers and ask them whether they will continue to support CMake 3.x version or not (I do not care that much about it and hence didn't contact them before).

My question is: why do you have to build ffmpeg and its dependencies from source if Homebrew provides pre-build binaries? If you use unsupported macOS version then consider updating it to at least macOS Ventura with OpenCore Legacy Patcher. Homebrew is a rolling release package manager and no maintainer wants to completely re-think distribution model for all 15k+ packages just because one or two major releases in some packages introduce breaking changes (even if the packages in question are very popular)

If you need CMake 3.x for you personal project (i.e. not to build Homebrew formulae) I'd suggest to either:

1. Switch to new CMake version (recommended)
2. Download binaries from the official website and use them (not recommended)
