Plugins can easily have compatibility issues. Should we use WASM components?

I found that the extension system of Zed is very stable.

Component model doesn't automatically solve the backward compatibility issue. Also, for the context the time we initially designed plugin component model was not ready enough to try. Additionally there are some things we were concerned, such as serialization / deserialization perfs, how to integrate wit bindgen to existing ast structures and eventually support backward compatibility using it.

It's not something we entirely gave up; overall we are open to explore the better way to move forward if someone can be the champion to push things forward.
